An Tir 12th Night

Pictures! There are 2 batches of them.

First Gallery is just the average (hah) day at 12th night followed by the mellow quiet evening visiting with friends. Yes I am being sarcastic.
It was a lot of fun and craziness. One thing that I find amazing are the little moments that still stick in my mind. You look over and there is a mother and child playing a game with a friend looking on and it just looks like a period painting. Another of a women braiding hair while in the children play around them, also looking like a painting come to life. I still love the father dressed in full armor being led by his daughter with his belt across the parking lot, every so often you would hear a woof or a bark. (Too cute) That night we had a super awesome party with Die Kompanie von Mittelschmerz and was up way to late or early depending on how you look at it.  Tons of friends and fun.

Second Gallery is the always wonderful Arts and Sciences being seen throughout the day on display and or worn. Just an amazing amount of crafted people around us.

Die Companie von Middleschmertz

Official Companie photos will be posted tonight.

I figure that I had only about 8 hours of sleep over the entire weekend and maybe that would explain why I crashed when I got home last night. Hmmmm, could it be that I had too much fun at 12th night. Nah, that couldn't be the problem.

Twas the Night Before Christmas!

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the skies,
Air defences were up, with electronic eyes. Combat
pilots were nestled in ready-room beds,
As enemy silhouettes danced in their heads.

Every jet on the apron, each SAM in its tube,
Was triply-redundant, linked to the Blue Cube,
And ELINT and AWACS gave coverage so dense
That nothing that flew could slip through our defence.

When out of the klaxon arose such a clatter
I dashed to the screen to see what was the matter;
I increased the gain and then, quick as a flash,
Fine-adjusted the filters to damp out the hash.

And there found the source of the warning we'd heeded:
An incoming blip, by eight escorts preceded.
"Alert status red!" went the word down the wire,
As we gave every system the codes that meant "FIRE!"

On Aegis! Up Patriot, Phalanx and Hawk!
And scramble our fighters--let's send the whole flock!
Launch decoys and missiles! Use chaff by the yard!
Get the kitchen sink up! Call the National Guard!

They turned toward the target, moved toward it, converged.
Till the tracks on the radar all finally merged,
And the sky was lit up with a demonic light,
As the foe met his fate in the high arctic night.

So we sent out some recon to look for debris,
Yet all that they found, both on land and on sea
Were some toys, a red hat, a charred left leather boot,
Broken sleigh bells, white hair, and a deer's parachute.

Now it isn't quite Christmas, with Saint Nick shot down.
There are unhappy kids in each village and town.
For the Spirit of Christmas can't hope to evade
All the web of defences we've carefully made.

But a crash program's on: Working hard, night and day,
All the elves are constructing a radar-proof sleigh.
So let's wait for next Christmas, in cheer and in health,
For the future has hope: Santa's coming by stealth!

Tomatoes (Fact or Fiction)?

I know that there have be issues with documenting tomatoes in period. So surprisingly my computer gave me the following for today's fact.

"Tomatoes were first cultivated in 700 AD by Aztecs and Incas. Explorers returning from Mexico introduced the tomato into Europe, where it was first mentioned in 1556. Tomatoes were originally sun-dried due to the absence of refrigeration, freezers and modern ovens. Drying tomatoes in the sun allowed for year round enjoyment of the harvest."

Hopefully this might help with the research. Giving us an area to start searching in. They are late period but they may just be back on the menu.

Grand Thing '09

For those who need to know this is a period event focusing on the Nordic and Celtic traditions of the Viking era with fighting, contests, games, and a Grand Feast!

It was great. Right in our backyard so we didn't have far to go. The weather was bright and sunny but just a tad windy. (half of my sunburn is windburn) Weather wise for Oregon it was a miracle, I remember last year being grey with showers.

There always seemed to be something happening. There was tons of events for the younglings and just as many for the adults.  But it never fails I didn't make it to any of the classes I wanted to go to.  Too busy elsewhere.

From Russia: A Memorial to the 9-11 Terrorist Attacks!

I just received an email that had the most amazing photoshow of a Russian Memorial that had been given to the US for 9-11.  My first though was "this could not be real, we would have heard about it" so I went to Snopes.com.

It's Real!!

Why haven't we heard or seen anything about it? It is truly a wonderful creation.

Here is the offical website:

This is another blog regarding the memorial with several other interesting links (they are also confused as to why haven't we heard about it):

(no subject)

Several people have recently been talking about honor and courtesy and as I thought about it the harder it got for me to define my beliefs. So with some help from friends and the internet I found statements that seemed the closest to what I believe Courtesy and Honor are.  These are MY guidelines and as it has been said each person has their own. Though, one person’s courtesy should not be another’s dishonor.

Queen Catherine's Elephant Dress

The lovely Queen of the West Catherine is stepping down this weekend, and several wonderful ladies decided to surprise her with an amazing outfit and I was invited to create an embroidered collar for her. I thought it might be fun to document to process.
